Ik Kil

20 Apr

As promised, here is the first of several planned posts about things to see and do in the Progreso area. Nothing like starting with a bang! Ik Kil Cenote is just so beautiful it may be the highlight of your visit (other than visiting with us of course!).

Ik Kil lit by the Afternoon sun.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say about this natural wonder. “The cenote is open to the sky with the water level about 26 metres (85 ft) below ground level. There is a carved stairway down to a swimming platform. The cenote is about 60 metres (200 ft) in diameter and about 40 metres (130 ft) deep. There are vines which reach from the opening all the way down to the water along with small waterfalls.”

When Ken was in Progreso he visited a small museum which described how an astroid hit in the Progreso area (actually at Chixelub) millions of years ago. This is the hit that many scientists believe led to the demise of the dinosaurs. Bits of the massive space rock broke off  and scattered in a circular pattern creating craters which have since filled with water. Hence, the cenotes!

This is perfect place for swimming in the clear blue water. This natural swimming pool is 196 feet wide and about 130 feet deep, it is an open cenote about 85 feet from the surface. The Mayan Pool is popular tourist destination. The pool was used by Red bull to host their Cliff Diving World Series in 2012. Participants from around the world came there and experienced the thrilling adventure. Here are some more photos: http://www.worldfortravel.com/2013/06/27/ik-kil-cenote-narural-pool-of-mexico/

Hi there Hazel! As I am really really new to this blogging thing, I am hoping I can learn from you! I am also from Manitoba – River Heights in Winnipeg actually – but left there over 30 years ago. I love this cenote that you have here but I have absolutely NO IDEA where it is! We have two different visitors coming down & would love to take them there if you would share with me where it is. Maybe when we get there we can get together for a little drinky poo! It is funny how the area of Progreso an Merida gets into your soul and somehow you just HAVE to be there. We have a condo in Telchac (off the beaten path – long story!!) Thanks for taking notice of my beginner blog and hoping we can meet when we get to paradise after Jan 7! Not long now! Hope to see you soon! Barb

Hi there Barb. You will be surprised to learn tat I am not Hazel. I am Leslie that you are friends with on Facebook. I had offered to get tickets for the fashion show for you but Mary stepped up instead. We will definitely get together once you settle in. One of my best friends is not far from you in Telchec but you will probably be in and out of Progreso and Merida a lot as you get your new place in order. I didn’t know you were a River Heights girl. I went to River Heights Hunior High and should have gone to Kelvin but left to live in Edmonton. So we have lots in common. I am in Winnipeg right now for Christmas but will celebrate New Years Eve in Merida with friends. Then back to Progreso on New Years Day. See you in the New Year. Oh, Ik Kil is near chitzchen itza but we have better ones closer to us. It is just the most photogenic one!
